Gusinsky Lends Butyrskaya a Hand

The Butyrskaya Prison asked its most famous modern-day inmate, media tycoon Vladimir Gusinsky, to provide humanitarian aid for the Moscow prison notorious for its terrible conditions.

The prison's acting chief, Valery Goncharuk, said Friday that Gusinsky's Media-MOST holding company has agreed to pay some of its bills for medicines, medical equipment, office supplies, food, bedding, kitchenware and construction materials, Interfax reported. Gusinsky has already given 400,000 rubles ($144,000) for food and the construction of a storage facility, he said.

No figure for Media-MOST's likely total donation was given.

When he was released on June 16 after spending three days in Butyrskaya, Gusinsky said he would campaign for the improved treatment of those in prison awaiting trial.
