Greenpeace Cleans Up Oil

Greenpeace has collected 15 metric tons of oil from the site of a 1993 oil spill in central Russia to protest what it calls government neglect of the environment, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Forty activists from the environmental group have collected oil at the site outside the city of Nizhnevartovsk since the start of August, using buckets and shovels to collect oil that covers the ground and has seeped into the earth, said Greenpeace spokesman Vladimir Chuprov.

Chuprov said the problem in Nizhnevartovsk exemplified how the government and Russian oil companies neglect the environment. He said a government cleanup effort was launched after the 1993 pipeline spill, but it wasn?t sufficient and the problem had been ignored since then.

Greenpeace activists will collect oil in Nizhnevartovsk until the end of August.
