Georgia Pullout Starts

TBILISI, Georgia -- Russia began withdrawing Soviet military hardware from Georgia on Friday in a process financed by Western countries and viewed by Tbilisi as a big step in the loosening of its ties with Moscow.

The first stage of the process envisages the withdrawal of hardware and army property from a base in Vaziani, 20 kilometers from Tbilisi.

Nikolai Zolotov, the acting chief commander of Russian troops in the Caucasus, said Russia was ready for the partial withdrawal of its troops from the Vaziani base by Dec. 31 and their complete disbandment by July 1, 2001.
