Dagestan Charges 5 Bombing Suspects

MAKHACHKALA, Dagestan -- Security officials Friday said five alleged Islamic rebels have been charged with terrorism in connection with the bombing of a Dagestani apartment building last September.

The five were charged with terrorism and will face trial later this month, said Ali Temirbekov, an aide to the prosecutor general in Dagestan. He said two more suspects were being sought by police, and that all were members of the Wahhabi sect, a strict Islamic group that has made inroads into Chechnya.

The suspects were charged in connection with the blast in Buinaksk, which destroyed an apartment building housing military officers, killing 64 people.

Itar-Tass named the five arrested suspects only by their last names: Abdulkadyrov, Abdusamedov, Magomedov and a father and son named Zainutdinov.

Russia has reported making several arrests in connection with a series of four blasts, which killed some 300 people in Buinaksk, Moscow and Volgodonsk. No trials had been announced until now.
