Almaty Awaits Growth

ALMATY, Kazakhstan — Kazakhstan’s Economy Ministry expects gross domestic product to grow 7.8 percent this year, up from 1.7 percent in 1999, Economy Minister Zhaksybek Kulekeyev said Friday.

GDP grew 10.5 percent in the first half of the year, compared with a drop of 3.3 percent in the same period last year, he told a government meeting in the capital, Astana.

The minister also forecast 2000 inflation at 10 percent, down from 16.8 percent in 1999, compared with this year’s budget projection of 9 percent.
