Activists Beaten

MOSCOW -- Environmentalists protesting the Chelyabinsk region's policies on radioactive waste have been harassed and beaten by regional Governor Pyotr Sumin's guards, activists said Friday.

The guards kicked and beat about 10 of the 30 protesters who have blocked the driveway to Sumin's office in a demonstration against his decision to use the heavily contaminated region as a dump site for imported radioactive waste, said Alisa Nikulina, one of the coordinators of the two-weeklong protest organized by the Moscow-based Ecodefense environmental group.

Nikulina said two of the protesters were handcuffed to the fence surrounding the governor's office and had to seek medical assistance at a local hospital.

Sumin's press office refused to comment Friday.
