Zenit to Take First-Leg Lead To Bradford

English premier league side Bradford City left St. Petersburg with its tail between its legs Wednesday after a 1-0 defeat to Zenit in the semifinal first leg of the Intertoto Cup.

Zenit made a strong showing in its home leg but failed to convert a string of chances that could have put the tie beyond all doubt. A 16th minute shot from Andrei Kobelev came back off the post, and Yevgeny Tarasov was at hand to fire the ball home.

Zenit kept the pressure up for most of the game with Kobelev striking the Bradford woodwork twice more before the break.

Bradford only managed to force a couple of corners in the first half, but the Englishmen started the second half in a more bullish fashion with veteran Stuart McCall setting up Lee Mills, who was denied by good work from Zenit keeper Vyacheslav Malafeyev.

But Zenit regained its poise, and Bradford had to fend off yet more attacks before Dean Windass was presented with an opportunity just before the final whistle.

Bradford coach Chris Hutchings remained confident despite the defeat.

"I don't like getting beaten, but to be honest, we could have easily been beaten resoundingly.

"Thankfully, we've only lost 1-0. I realize you've got to take the losses with the wins, and now it's all about how we react to this," he said.

The return leg is at Bradford's Valley Parade next Wednesday. The winner will face either Celta Vigo or Aston Villa.
