Ukraine to Pay for Gas

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan -- An agreement has been reached on an arrangement for paying Ukraine's natural gas debts to Turkmenistan, said Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko on Tuesday.

Turkmenistan stopped gas supplies to Ukraine in May 1999 after the country ran up a debt of some $107 million.

There was no agreement as of Tuesday on when supplies might be resumed.

Timoshenko met with Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov and afterward announced that the debt would be paid off by 2002.
