Tiger Menaces Far East

MOSCOW -- A Siberian snow tiger has begun frequenting a village in the Far East, frightening residents and attacking domestic pets and livestock, Itar-Tass reported.

The Amur tiger appeared in the village of Dolina on Saturday and Sunday night and has apparently lost its fear of people, the news agency reported. The animal mauled a dog and a goat last week, the report said.

The Amur tigers live in dense forests on the Pacific coast near China and are faced with extinction from poaching and habitat encroachment. Only about 300 of the tigers remain in the wild.
