Proton Launch

MOSCOW -- A Proton rocket carrying a Defense Ministry satellite took off Wednesday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, RIA news agency reported.

The Proton-K lifted off at 3:44 a.m. Moscow time carrying a Kosmos satellite, RIA said.

"This launch is important in estimating the readiness of the Proton-K booster rocket for a more important mission on July 12, when the same kind of booster will carry the Russian-built Zvezda service module to the ISS," RIA quoted an unidentified space official as saying.

The Zvezda module will form the living quarters of the $60 billion International Space Station.
