No Bail for Lazarenko

SAN FRANCISCO -- A U.S. judge has denied bail for former Ukrainian Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko, saying he might attempt to flee the country rather than face trial on charges of laundering millions of dollars allegedly received in bribes.

U.S. Magistrate Elizabeth Laporte said Tuesday that Lazarenko could be deemed a flight risk because he already fled similar charges in Switzerland, appeared to have a significant amount of money, and had no ties to the United States except for three adult children who are studying in the country.

Lazarenko, 47, is now being held in federal prison outside San Francisco on charges of laundering some $114 million he allegedly stole while in elected office in Ukraine in the 1990s. He has pleaded not guilty to the U.S. charges.
