Meningitis Outbreak

MOSCOW -- A seasonal outbreak of meningitis in the Far East has hospitalized more than 250 children, news reports said.

A total of 255 children ages 2 to 17 have been hospitalized in the city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Itar-Tass reported Sunday.

Dr. Sergei Tikhonov, chief doctor for the city's infection clinic, told NTV television that the virus, named Echo-17, was identified three years ago and is typical only for that Far East region.

Meningitis is an infection of the linings of the brain and spinal cord.
