Koloskov Slams Russia

MOSCOW -- Russia would not have fared well at Euro 2000 even if it had qualified for the tournament, according to the country's soccer chief, Vyacheslav Koloskov.

"We would have had no chance of making a top spot," the outspoken president of the Soccer Union was quoted as saying in Wednesday's edition of Sovietsky Sport newspaper.

"Everything good that I saw there has nothing to do with our national team. We don't have a single outstanding player and we lag behind in both physical fitness and technical skills."

Russia missed out on Euro 2000 after failing to beat Ukraine at home in its final qualifier last October.

The Russians, who have failed to impress in a series of friendlies this year, begin their 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign against Switzerland on Sept. 2.
