Kazakh Funds Frozen

GENEVA -- Switzerland has frozen bank accounts controlled by Kazakh government officials after a U.S. request for judicial assistance in an inquiry into alleged criminal money transactions, federal police said Monday.

Spokesman Folco Galli said Switzerland blocked accounts at two banks in Geneva last month after receiving a request for legal assistance from the U.S. Justice Department in mid-June.

"We have blocked funds at two banks in Geneva," he said. He declined to reveal how much money had been frozen or give further details.

No comment was immediately available from U.S. law enforcement officials or from the Kazakh government.
