Hockey Star Dies

MOSCOW -- Anatoly Firsov, one of the Soviet Union's most celebrated ice hockey players, has died from an apparent heart attack, Russian hockey officials said Monday.

They said Firsov, who won three Olympic and eight world titles in the 1960s and '70s as a member of the powerful Soviet team, died at his dacha near Moscow on Sunday night. He was 59.

The CSKA Moscow right wing, who was known for his blistering slap-shot, retired from ice hockey in the mid-1970s and was elected a member of the country's Supreme Soviet in 1989.
