Golden Telecom to Build Corporate Internet Center

Golden Telecom has announced plans to build Russia's first dedicated Internet data center, a 1,500-square-meter electronic warehouse for web sites and computer applications.

Essentially a multilevel bank of high-powered servers attached to the alternative carrier's backbone network, the data center will provide virtual web hosting, dedicated web hosting, co-location and application hosting to corporate clients whose own servers and phone lines can't handle high volumes of data or traffic.

The center is being built right on the backbone network to speed user access to web sites and other data, Golden Telecom chief financial officer David Wisher said in a telephone interview Monday.

The facility will cost between $3 million and $5 million and is due to become operational this fall, the company said in a statement Friday.

The data will be protected from fire, weather, power outages, tampering and theft by backup diesel generators, environmental controls, closed circuit television, secure access and digital security systems.

Among the services offered is mirrored sites hosted on servers abroad owned by Golden Telecom's parent company, Virginia-based Global TeleSystems. The company said it likewise would market the Russian data center to customers abroad.

Golden Telecom, which owns a collection of Internet service providers with a total of around 33,000 subscribers as of the first quarter of this year, already hosts around 700 web sites, the company said.
