Far East Editor Arrested

MOSCOW -- The editor of a Vladivostok newspaper that published transcripts of obscenity-laden phone conversations attributed to Primorye Governor Yevgeny Nazdratenko and his allies was arrested Thursday on charges of "petty hooliganism," Interfax reported.

The transcripts are said to reflect instructions given to underlings by Nazdratenko, his top deputy Konstantin Tolstoshein and Vladivostok Mayor Yury Kopylov on how to ensure Kopylov's victory in the city's recent mayoral election.

Shortly after the arrest, Irina Grebneva, editor of Arsenyevskiye Vesti, announced a hunger strike to protest the five-day sentence, Interfax said. Grebneva, 57, is being held in a special jail where prisoners are fed only once a day.
