Cyclers Killed in Crash

MOSCOW -- Cycling champion Alexander Khromykh, 27, and promising Olympic hopeful Nikolai Maksakov, 17, were killed Sunday in a car crash.

The deaths followed a serious accident on Thursday involving Olympic women's time trial champion Zulfia Zabirova, who crashed in a road race and suffered head injuries. Zabirova reportedly remains in serious condition.

Khromykh and Maksakov were killed instantly after their car skidded off the road near Moscow's Olympic velodrome and hit a street light at full speed, said Anna Nefyodova, a spokeswoman for the cycling federation.
