Customs Plans Reforms

MOSCOW -- The government is planning to overhaul the way it levies customs duties, lowering the highest tariffs and making the rest more uniform, said a customs official Thursday.

Although the changes are still being worked out, the State Customs Committee envisages a system in which the highest import tariffs f now between 25 percent and 30 percent f will be lowered to 20 percent, said Andrei Kudryashev, head of the committee's tariff regulation department.

Most goods that are charged no customs duty will be levied a 5 percent tariff, he said, adding that the proposals will be submitted for approval Saturday.
