Bribe Probe Prolonged

MOSCOW -- The Prosecutor General's Office has extended for a further three months its probe of alleged bribe taking by Kremlin officials, Interfax quoted officials as saying Wednesday.

Swiss authorities are also investigating the allegations that government officials were paid millions of dollars in kickbacks by Swiss-based construction firms Mabetex and Mercata, which were involved in Kremlin renovation deals.

"The investigation has been extended in connection with the expiry of the previous July 8 deadline and the need to continue inquiries in Russia, Switzerland and several other countries," Interfax quoted prosecutor Ruslan Tamayev as saying.

The Prosecutor General's Office could not be immediately contacted to confirm the Interfax report.
