WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

The Martians Are Coming

As scientists excitedly explore the new evidence of water on the red planet, Pyotr Mamonov's "Is There Life on Mars?" seemingly couldn't come at a better time. However, the avant-garde pop-rock musician-turned-actor has written a show that is less about the red planet than about people at odds with the Earth. Showtime is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Stanislavsky Drama Theater, 23 Tverskaya Ulitsa. Metro Tverskaya. Tel. 299-7221.

Good Ol' Betrayal

If instead of looking into the future you'd rather stick with the past, check out Alexander Dargomyzhsky's opera "Rusalka." Based on the Pushkin poem, the opera follows the tale of a miller's daughter who falls in love with a prince, only to fall hard when he betrays her. "Rusalka" begins at 7 p.m. at the Bolshoi Theater, 1 Teatralnaya Ploshchad. Metro Teatralnaya. Tel. 292-9986.

Strange Propositions

Sick of having a good time drinking heavily and dating people? If so, you'll probably relate to the main character of Vladimir in Olga Basov's recent film "In My Place," where the rich aging hero of the piece pays a young companion to do all these things for him. "In My Place" (Vmesto Menya) plays Tuesday at 11:45 a.m., 2, 3:55, 5:50, 7:50 and 9:45 p.m. at Karo Film located on the 3rd floor of Ramstore, 6A Sheremetyevskaya Ulitsa. Metro Rizhskaya. Tel. 937-2616/17.
