Violence in Kosovo

PRISTINA, Yugoslavia -- Russian peacekeepers fired warning shots to disperse a rock-throwing crowd angry at denial of permission to affix a plaque for the Kosovo Liberation Army to a monument, a NATO spokesman said.

The incident occurred Monday at Kosovska Kamenica, said Specialist William R. Putnam, a spokesman at Camp Bondsteel, a U.S. base in Kosovo.

The violence began after a gathering of about 3,500 ethnic Albanians erected a monument to mark the first anniversary of the Serb pullout from Kosovo, and peacekeepers prevented the crowd from affixing a plaque to the monument mentioning the KLA.
