Ustinov in Firing Line

MOSCOW -- The State Duma's two major liberal factions, Yabloko and the Union of Right Forces, or SPS, submitted to the Duma Council on Tuesday a draft appeal to President Vladimir Putin asking him to sack Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov, who was responsible for last week's arrest of media magnate Vladimir Gusinsky.

The deputy head of the SPS faction, Viktor Pokhmelkin, said Ustinov's office "has been increasingly abusing its [right to use] punitive measures, which the recent arrest of Vladimir Gusinsky proves.'' He recalled that Putin has proposed expanding the prosecutor's powers and said that SPS and Yabloko call instead for the prosecutor's office to be subordinated to the Justice Ministry.
