U.S. Warns Belarus

WASHINGTON -- The United States advised the Belarussian government Tuesday not to take revenge on opposition politicians who visited Washington last week.

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko said Tuesday that the government would treat the returning politicians as a possible security threat and refer the matter to Belarus' Security Council.

State Department spokesman Philip Reeker said: "Any retribution against these individuals, because of their meetings in Washington, would be a serious mistake, and in the lead-up to elections later this year, would further set back efforts to restore legitimate, democratic process in Belarus."
