U.S. Embassy Threat

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan -- The U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan was sealed off briefly Thursday after security forces received an anonymous call saying there might be an explosive device in the vicinity.

But the cordon around the compound in the capital Tashkent was later lifted.

Witnesses said nearby buildings, including a kindergarten, had been evacuated in the morning and sniffer dogs brought in to search for bombs. By early afternoon the situation on the streets around the embassy had returned to normal.

Security in Tashkent has been particularly tight since February 1999, when a series of bombs went off killing at least 16 people and narrowly missing President Islam Karimov. Karimov blamed the attack on hard-line Islamic opponents.
