Troops for Sierra Leone

MOSCOW -- President Vladimir Putin's request to send 115 troops and four helicopters to join United Nations peacekeepers in Sierra Leone was approved by the upper house of parliament Wednesday. The vote was 94 to 15 with nine abstentions. Under the Constitution, the Federation Council must approve the deployment of troops outside the country.

The contingent, to be equipped with four Mi-24 helicopter gunships, will provide air cover for UN convoys on the ground, conduct search-and-rescue missions, and carry out air patrols and monitoring.
