Tajikistan Crime

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- A man convicted of murdering a prominent Tajik opposition leader has been sentenced to 17 years in prison by the Supreme Court, a Security Ministry spokesman said Tuesday.

Abdullo Tursunov, 21, fired the shots that killed Otakhon Latifi, 62, in 1998, the spokesman said.

Latifi, a former journalist, had returned to the country following a 1997 peace accord that ended a five-year civil war between the hard-line, secular government and the mostly Islamic opposition.
