Spectators Near Million

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands -- More than 950,000 people have attended Euro 2000 matches so far and the total will top the million mark after this week's semifinals, European soccer's governing body, UEFA, said Monday.

A total of 955,150 spectators have watched the first 28 matches, giving an average attendance figure of 34,113 per match, UEFA said in a statement.

The attendance figures showed the stadiums were practically full for the weekend's two most attractive quarterfinals f the Netherlands' 6-1 demolition of Yugoslavia in Rotterdam and France's 2-1 win over Spain in Bruges.

But they also revealed that more than 7,000 seats were empty when Portugal defeated Turkey in Amsterdam and Italy beat Romania in Brussels in the other quarterfinals Saturday.
