Russia Cyclists to Race

MOSCOW -- Former Giro d'Italia winners Pavel Tonkov and Yevgeny Berzin and other top Russian riders can compete at the Sydney Olympics after a debt was settled by their national cycling federation.

"The problem has been finally resolved," said Russian Cycling Federation president Andrei Zakharov on Wednesday.

"This week we have sent the final payment of $50,000 to the International Cycling Union, or UCI, so there is nothing that can stop us from sending a team to Sydney."

Earlier this year, the UCI threatened to bar the Russians from the Games if the RCF failed to pay $150,000 to clear a debt of $250,000 incurred when Russian team Roslotto collapsed in 1996.
