Miners Die in Ukraine

KIEV -- Two miners were killed and another injured in separate coal mine accidents in Ukraine's Luhansk region, emergency officials said Tuesday.

One miner was killed after violating safety rules in a mine near the town of Pervomaisk on Monday, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

Another miner was killed by a collapsing coal layer in a mine near the town of Rovenki, the ministry said.

Also Monday, a coal layer collapsed onto a miner as he worked in a mine near the town of Brianka. The miner was hospitalized, though his life was not believed to be in danger.

A total of 173 miners have been killed this year in job-related accidents in Ukraine, the ministry said.
