Media-MOST Wins Libel Lawsuit

Media-MOST on Monday won a lawsuit against Ogonyok magazine for staining its business reputation in an article published in December.

The magazine had reported that Media-MOST had failed to pay off large debts.

In a statement issued after the decision, Media-MOST said the information in Ogonyok was similar to statements made by President Vladimir Putin after the arrest of Media-MOST chairman Vladimir Gusinsky earlier this month.

"Nevertheless, the leadership of Media-MOST has decided not to sue Vladimir Putin because it considers it unacceptable to discredit the head of state all the time," the statement said.

Ogonyok was ordered to publish a retraction.

On Tuesday, Gusinsky is to report to the Prosecutor General's Office for questioning, Itar-Tass reported. Gusinsky was questioned Friday, but said afterward that he refused to give testimony, calling the investigation "absurd."
