Japan Favors Wireless

TOKYO -- Japan is increasingly embracing the Internet as a part of everyday life, but the world's second-largest economy is doing so in its own way, with more than a third of net surfers access the web using wireless technology.

The explosive growth of Internet-compatible mobile phones is being credited for the doubling of Internet usage in Japan in 1999.

One in five Japanese f just over 27 million people f has an Internet connection, according to a report by the Communications Ministry. Industry data shows about 10 million logged on through hand-held connections.
