Italian Banker Dies

MILAN, Italy -- Enrico Cuccia, honorary chairman of Italian merchant bank Mediobanca, has died at the age of 92 after dominating the world of Italian finance for more than five decades, banking sources said Friday.

Cuccia died at a hospital on the outskirts of Milan. It was not clear when he died and the sources gave no further details.

Cuccia masterminded a web of interlocking stakes in Italy's top companies f with his bank at the center f that made him the most powerful man in Italian finance until his death.
