India: Help for Pilots

MOSCOW -- Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh said Friday that he would try to find "the earliest lasting solution" in the case of four ethnic Russian pilots who are serving life terms in an Indian prison on arms smuggling charges.

The four aviators are members of Latvia's large Russian minority. Russia granted them citizenship last year and supporters in Russia say the men are being held in inhumane conditions.

"We recognize the sensitivity of the issue," Singh said at a Moscow news conference. He said that as far as Indian law allows, "it shall be my endeavor to find the earliest lasting solution to the issue."

Russia's human rights commissioner has asked that the pilots be allowed to serve their sentences in Russia. Supporters of the men say perjury proceedings have begun against some witnesses against them.
