Gorbachev Fund Denial

MOSCOW -- Mikhail Gorbachev's research center denied Thursday that the former Soviet leader was saved by a Costa Rican lifeguard from the Caribbean Sea, saying the report was an act of self-publicity by the lifeguard.

The daily Moskovsky Komsomolets reported Wednesday that Gorbachev, 69, swam too far out to sea and had to be rescued by the lifeguard after the alarm had been raised by his daughter and granddaughter who were sitting on a beach.

"He went to Costa Rica but there was no such incident," the spokesman for the Moscow-based Gorbachev Fund said by telephone. "The lifeguard was doing some self-promotion, that's all."
