German Turmoil

VAALS, Netherlands -- Germany coach Erich Ribbeck, under pressure to drop Lothar Matth?us, said the controversial libero would stay in his Euro 2000 squad but he would make several changes for Saturday's game against England.

"I have spoken to him and as you can see he is still here," Ribbeck said Thursday after press reports that Matth?us had asked to be sent home following heavy criticism of his performance in the 1-1 draw with Romania on Monday.

Ribbeck said that following a training injury to captain Oliver Bierhoff, Ulf Kirsten would play up front with Carsten Jancker against archrival England.

It remains to be seen whether Matth?us, who was repeatedly caught out of position Monday and was substituted in the second half, will start the match against England.
