EU Examines AOL

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- The European Commission opened a 4-month in-depth probe Monday into the planned merger of America Online Inc. and Time Warner Inc., setting the ground rules for future links between entertainment and Internet companies.

The Commission's decision to examine the mega-merger comes just four days after it launched a similar probe into the planned joint venture between Time Warner's musicoperations and Britain's EMI Group PLC.

It said the main competition issue arising from the merger was the vertical integration of Time Warner's content with AOL's online services, a problem complicated by AOL's joint promotion, distribution and sales agreement with Germany's Bertelsmann.
