Estonia Shipwreck

TALLINN, Estonia -- A freighter sank within a few kilometers off Tallinn on Tuesday, killing one crewman, the Baltic News Service reported.

Six other crew members were rescued after the 55-meter, 500-ton freighter capsized and sank to the bottom of the 60-meter-deep Bay of Tallinn shortly afterit had been loaded with its cargo of flint ore, according to the news agency.

Vello Muru of Estonia's waterway's department was quoted as telling BNS that the ship may have been improperly loaded, causing it to capsize as it tried to turn.

The ship was Lithuanian-owned and the crew members were all from that country.
