Chinese Exports Surge

BEIJING -- China said Thursday its exports shot up 36.8 percent year-on-year in January to May, continuing a surge from a low 1999 base that experts said bodes well for economic growth.

Statistics posted on the Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Ministry web site showed imports in the first five months of the year rose 35.4 percent from the same period last year.

Exports of $92.8 billion and imports of $81.82 billion left a trade surplus for the five-month period of $10.46 billion, an increase of 47.9 percent over the $7.07 billion surplus China reported in the same months of 1999.
