Bye-Bye to Mir

ASTANA, Kazakhstan -- Cosmonauts Sergei Zalyotin and Alexander Kaleri prepared to say goodbye to the Mir station late Thursday at the end of what may be the last manned mission to the aged space laboratory.

The crew was due to return to earth at 7:44 a.m. Friday, landing on the remote steppe of northern Kazakhstan. Unless new funds are found to keep Mir aloft, it will be programmed to crash into the ocean later this year.

Vyacheslav Mikhailichenko of the Russian Aviation and Space Agency said in Moscow that another mission with cosmonauts was planned for late November or early December.
