Budweiser's 'Whassup!?' Wins Clio




DDB Worldwide of Chicago took the top television advertising prize at the International Advertising Festival on Saturday for a U.S. Budweiser beer campaign that has millions of Americans greeting each other with a throaty cry of "Whassup!?"


The series of ads is credited by Anheuser-Busch executives with a 2 percent rise year on year in U.S. supermarket sales in the first quarter of 2000.


"Whassup" collected the Grand Clio award for television ads in the United States last month, and judges in Cannes said it was a clear winner of the Grand Prix.


The campaign is based on four friends talking on the telephone and greeting each other with the "Whassup!?" catch phrase that has become a cultural phenomenon in the United States since the spots were first launched during this year's Superbowl.
