Bookie Steals $20,000

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia -- A near riot erupted in Phnom Penh on Sunday when a Vietnamese bookie accepting bets on Euro 2000 matches absconded with more than $20,000 in bets laid by more than 100 punters, a Cambodian newspaper reported Monday.

The theft is just the latest indication of the fevered Cambodian public interest in gambling on the results of the European soccer championships, with traffic in the city's market areas crippled each morning as throngs descend on bookies to bet on the day's matches.

Euro 2000 gambling fever has prompted many ordinary Cambodians to sell or pawn their possessions to afford to place new bets.

"There are some people who bet hundreds of dollars, and there are many places where people bet their cars and motorcycles," the Rasmei Angkor daily reported.
