Belarus Sentences

MINSK, Belarus -- A Belarus court suspended two opposition leaders' jail sentances on Monday as European officials issued appeals for authorities to engage in political dialogue before general elections later this year.

The Minsk municipal court sentenced Social Democratic Party leader Nikolai Statkevich to a 2-year suspended term and Valery Shchukin, a member of the parliament dissolved by President Alexander Lukashenko, to one year.

Both denied charges of staging an unauthorized rally in Minsk last October that degenerated into clashes between police and demonstrators.
