Arms Dump Ablaze

ST. PETERSBURG -- An arms dump at an army base on the edge of St. Petersburg burst into flames Monday, triggering shell explosions a month after it last caught fire, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

In May, the dump erupted in flames, unleashing hours of continuous blasts that spewed large chunks of flaming shrapnel, but no one at the nearby military base was injured.

"After the last fire, what was left of the place where shells are stored before being destroyed caught fire at about 5 p.m. and shells started exploding," an Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman said by telephone.

He said the fire was probably caused by smoldering turf.
