Yeltsin Enjoys the Majors' Gin, Cheese

LONDON -- Former President Boris Yeltsin and his entourage drank the British prime minister's country retreat out of gin during an official visit at Chequers, northwest of London, in September 1994, John Major's wife was quoted Saturday as saying.

"I think he enjoyed the English country house," said Norma Major in a radio interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation's Sunday program on Radio 4, "Desert Island Discs."

"And the stewards told me afterward they cleaned the house out of gin, but they brought huge supplies of their own Russian black bread and their own Coca-Cola and all kinds of things like that."

Yeltsin also apparently revealed a taste for British cheese.

"We served him some Stilton cheese at lunch and he liked the Sage Derby as well, so he went home with a lump of Stilton and some sage from the garden," Norma Major said.
