WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

Soothing Currents

Come hear the sounds of Harry Starreveld. Hailing from the Netherlands, Harry takes the flute well beyond that old-school "Peter and the Wolf" level, delivering an avant-garde performance not to be missed. And it's free! The concert begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Conservatory Rakhmaninov Hall, 11 Bolshaya Nikitskaya. Metro Pushkinskaya or Arbatskaya. Tel. 229-0294/7795/8183.

Warring Women

If Shakespeare could regularly wax lyrical on the jealous little feuds of Italian city states, it seems only fair for Gaetano Donizetti to take a crack at high British history. That's exactly what he does in his opera "Maria Stuarda." Inspired by Friedrick Schiller's famous tragedy, the opera focuses on the deadly confrontation between Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth I. "Maria Stuarda" starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Novaya Opera Theater, 3 Karetny Ryad. Metro Mayakovskaya or Chekhovskaya. Tel. 200-0868/1830.

Behind the Music

Behind every great man is a woman, so they say. And Pyotr Tchaikovsky was no exception - well, not completely. The letterly biographical drama "Unseen Friend" examines the unfolding friendship between the composer and his benefactress, Nadezhda von Mekk. "Unseen Friend" (Nezrimy Drug) begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gorky Art Theater, 22 Tverskoi Bulvar. Metro Pushkinskaya. For reservations call 203-8773, for information call 203-6222/2029.
