Weapons Delay Okayed

THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said Friday it had approved Russia's request to delay meeting a target for destroying part of its arsenal.

The decision, approved by OPCW members at its fifth annual conference in The Hague, hinged on Russia meeting an April 2002 deadline for destroying 20 percent of its 40,000 ton arsenal.

The government has requested additional financial and technical help in trimming its stockpile after announcing last month it would not meet an April 2000 target to destroy 1 percent of its arsenal.
