Visas to Hungary

BUDAPEST, Hungary -- and Russia have agreed to introduce a mutual visa requirement June 3, 2001, Hungary's Foreign Ministry said Friday, ending part of the legacy of their shared Communist past.

"Hungary welcomes ... that Russia had shown understanding toward Hungary's European Union harmonization obligations in the field of visa policy," the ministry said in a statement.

The two countries have signed a temporary agreement, effective June 3, 2000, covering traveling rules until the visa requirement comes into force.

Hungary hopes to join the EU in 2003 and has to bring its policy into line with that of EU member states, which all require a visa from Russian nationals.
