Ukraine's Spring Sowing Finishing Up

KIEV -- Ukraine has finished this season's sugar beet sowings as the spring planting campaign as a whole moves toward completion, said Agriculture Ministry officials Friday.

Beet plantings reached 884,000 hectares, compared with 1.1 million in 1999.

The ministry said farmers had now sown 11.9 million hectares to spring crops, or 91 percent of the total area to be planted this season. The figure included 4.7 million hectares sown to spring grains.

Farms planned to sow a total of 13.1 million hectares this spring, including around six million hectares of spring grains.

The ministry said the country's grain area will reach 13.9 million hectares in 1999-2000, compared with 13.2 million last season. Officials forecast an overall grain crop of 24 million metric tons, even less than last year's 24.4 million tons.
