Ukraine Tatar Rally

KIEV -- About 15,000 Crimean Tatars gathered Thursday in Crimea's capital Simferopol for a rally to mark the 56th anniversary of their deportation by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, and to demand greater rights in independent Ukraine.

The Tatars demonstrated at a railway station and in a city park, where their parents and grandparents were sent into exile from, Interfax reported.

The Tatars also set up tents in Simferopol's central square in front of the Crimean parliament, demanding a representational quota in Crimea's governing bodies for members of their ethnic group and a say in the division of former collective farm land.
